Condition: Used

On offer is a pair of antique fine silver and gold temporals or earrings from Oman.  Made of fine silver, they are decorated with gold overlay.  These are of rare detail with spikes around the equatorial line and other rare detail. Each piece is about 80 mm, the outer diameter is 125x38mm (including the hook).  The weight of the two pieces together is about 98g.
These are exquisite pieces but show age-appropriate wear. There are some dents on the surface of both earrings, some substantial. These imperfections have been factored into the price.
Although referred to as earrings, these are too large to be worn on earlobes. Traditionally they were attached to a headdress on a chain, and for major occasions, several of such pieces may have been attached to a ring.  The last two photos, courtesy of Oman and Zanzibar Virtual Museum show how such ornaments would have been worn.
T
his design is typical for the end of the 19th century – the mid-20th century.  Similar pieces can be seen in the Omani collection of the British Museum (e.g. online collection number 2009.6023.176-177), and documented in a number of publications on ethnic Omani Jewelry, e.g. in Oman Adorned by Shelton, Richmond (1997, Apex)
The listing is for the PAIR.
DISCLAIMER: The piece has not been tested for silver composition,  however, Omani silver is traditionally of very high silver content and this certainly appears to be the case for this traditional piece as well.

COLORS: Our photos are taken in different lighting in an attempt to show how beads look in different lighting conditions. We make every effort to show colors as accurately as possible. The white background photos are taken in daylight conditions. The black background photos are taken in the strong lab light and would be representative of what they would look like in the evening electric light. Some of the photos are backlit to emphasize their translucency. Note that monitor settings strongly affect the way the colors look.
